Architectural Environment for Parental Well-Being
Relief in a Forced Normal proposes a homelike third space and transitional care environment for parents of children in pediatric oncology, designed to support emotional resilience through architecture. Rooted in principles of positive distraction and sensory engagement, the project introduces spaces like Lightfall, The Hearth, and Stillspace to create moments of pause, connection, and reflection. By inviting presence and autonomy within a healthcare context, the design seeks to soften the experience of crisis and offer a new rhythm of care.
1. Lightfall - Entry/Threshold
Defined by light and openness, Lightfall offers a moment of stillness at the building’s edge. With tall glazing and overhead windows, the space draws in natural light and casts soft shadows that encourage a shift in attention... grounding visitors in the present before they move forward.
The Stillspace - Library/Alone
A contemplative refuge for solitude and focus, Stillspace invites quiet engagement and inward reflection. Rooted in the tradition of the library, it becomes a gentle pause in the spatial rhythm - where knowledge, memory, and imagination are held with care.
The proposed space is located on the 5th floor of the campus, positioned between three main structures. To the top right of the plan is the new addition and pediatric oncology wing; to the bottom is the emergency department; and to the left is the office building. Families arriving from the family housing building would enter the space by crossing a skybridge from the left of the plan. Once inside, they can enjoy the space much like a home, with amenities such as a kitchen, library, transformable living room, and even an outdoor backyard-style patio.
Children’s Nebraska offers a unique opportunity to enhance the healing experience for families. While recent renovations to the oncology wing have focused on clinical improvements, there is great potential to further support parental mental health through thoughtful design. The site provides exciting opportunities to connect existing green spaces, link family housing directly to the pediatric oncology wing, and celebrate the hospital’s beloved umbrella icon... a joyful and symbolic representation of childhood healing.
